Outdoor Burn Guidelines: What You Need to Know Before You Burn

Burning brush or debris is a common part of rural life, but it comes with serious risks if not done responsibly. The Putnam County Fire Districts want to remind all residents to follow local outdoor burn regulations to help protect our community and natural resources.

Here are a few key guidelines:

• Never burn on windy days. Even a small breeze can cause flames to spread quickly.
  
• Keep your fire small and manageable, and always have water or a fire extinguisher nearby.
  
• Stay with your fire at all times. Leaving a fire unattended, even briefly, can lead to serious consequences.
  
• Burn only natural materials like brush, branches, and untreated wood. Burning trash, plastics, or hazardous materials is illegal and dangerous.
  
• Check with your local township office or fire department for current burn bans or permit requirements, especially during dry seasons.
