Fire Protection Safety Tips: Keep Your Home and Family Safe

Fire prevention starts with awareness and small actions that can make a big difference. The Putnam County Fire Districts want to help you stay safe year-round with a few important reminders:

  • Test smoke alarms monthly and change the batteries at least once a year. Replace alarms every 10 years.
  • Create a family escape plan and practice it twice a year. Make sure everyone knows two ways out of every room.
  • Keep flammable materials like curtains, paper, and bedding at least three feet away from heat sources.
  • Never leave cooking unattended. Most home fires start in the kitchen, and a few seconds of distraction can lead to disaster.
  • Store fire extinguishers in key areas like the kitchen and garage, and learn how to use them properly.

Prevention is the best defense against fire emergencies. If you ever have questions or need help assessing your home’s safety, reach out to your local fire department. We’re here to serve and protect.
